The Khavedamsa Chart D40
Maternal legacy — the maternal line and auspicious or inauspicious effects.
The D40 (Khavedamsa or Chatvarimshamsa) divides each sign into forty to study what flows down the maternal line — inherited traits, blessings and difficulties — and general auspiciousness.

What the Khavedamsa (D40) shows
Every divisional chart magnifies one department of life. The Khavedamsa divides each sign into 40 equal parts, then maps each part to a full sign — producing a new 12-sign chart that zooms in on the maternal line and auspicious or inauspicious effects. A promise made in the main birth chart (D1) is confirmed only if it also holds up in the relevant varga; this is how experienced astrologers separate strong promises from weak ones.
How it's used
The D40 is read for the strength and condition of planets relevant to maternal legacy. A planet that is strong in both the D1 and the D40 gives full results in that area; one that weakens in the D40 delivers less than the main chart suggests. It is always judged alongside the D1 and the D9, never alone.
