Dasha · Major Period 9/9

Mercury Mahadasha बुध

A 17-year Vimshottari period governed by Mercury ☿ — intellect, speech, commerce — the prince and the messenger.

The Mercury mahadasha brings seventeen years governed by intellect and communication. Mercury is buddhi (discriminating mind), speech, trade and skill, so this period favours education, business, writing, networking and anything analytical or verbal. It tends to be busy, mentally active and commercially productive. A strong Mercury gives sharp thinking, success in trade and fluent communication; an afflicted Mercury can scatter into nervousness, poor judgement in deals, or restless overthinking.

What the Mercury mahadasha brings

When Mercury is strong/well-placed: Success in business and trade, education and learning, writing and communication, networking, and sharp practical intelligence.

When Mercury is weak/afflicted: Nervousness and overthinking, poor judgement in deals, scattered focus, speech or nerve issues, and unreliable communication.

Sub-periods (antardashas)

Every mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas (bhuktis) — sub-periods ruled in turn by each of the nine planets, sized in proportion to their own dasha length. So a Mercury mahadasha opens with Mercury–Mercury, then Mercury–Ketu, and so on. The interplay between the major lord (Mercury) and the sub-lord is what fine-tunes the actual results month to month — which is why a precise chart matters. This site computes all three levels (Maha → Antar → Pratyantar).
