The Mercury mahadasha brings seventeen years governed by intellect and communication. Mercury is buddhi (discriminating mind), speech, trade and skill, so this period favours education, business, writing, networking and anything analytical or verbal. It tends to be busy, mentally active and commercially productive. A strong Mercury gives sharp thinking, success in trade and fluent communication; an afflicted Mercury can scatter into nervousness, poor judgement in deals, or restless overthinking.

Sub-periods (antardashas)
Every mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas (bhuktis) — sub-periods ruled in turn by each of the nine planets, sized in proportion to their own dasha length.
