Bhava · The Twelve Houses
The 1st House Tanu Bhava
Self, body, personality
The first house (lagna) is the seed of the entire chart — the rising sign that colours everything else. It is you: your body, your vitality, your temperament and the face you show the world. A strong, well-tenanted 1st house gives health, presence and a clear sense of self. Because the lagna lord governs the whole horoscope, this house is the single most important in Jyotish — every other house is counted from it.

House type — Kendra + Trikona (the strongest house)
In classical Jyotish, houses are grouped by nature. The 1st house is a kendra + trikona (the strongest house). Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are pillars of strength; trikonas (1, 5, 9) are the most auspicious; dusthanas (6, 8, 12) bring difficulty but also depth; upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) grow stronger over time and reward effort. This shapes how any planet behaves once it lands here.
